24 WEEKS: On labor day, we had a big scare and I realized how much I already love Kale. It's hard to grasp just how much something means to you until you come close to losing it. I was driving by myself along a 4 lane road about a mile from our house when someone failed to stop at a cross-section and plowed into the driver's side of our Lexus SUV. This caused the SUV to fish-tail and then flip/roll the full 360 degrees. It actually rolled onto the passenger's side, then upside down on the roof, then on the driver's side, and finally back right-side up. I had my seat belt on, and the air bags deployed. The SUV was pretty banged up and we think it's totaled - it was a shock when I saw the damage again in the tow yard. I got out of the car, sat down on the road and started screaming. All I could think was, "Please God, let my baby be okay." I called 911, but a cop was on the scene before anyone answered. I also called Jason and he came out right away and brought me to the hospital (the idiotic paramedics decided that I should call my OB and go home and take a hot bath). I wasn't bleeding as far as I knew and I felt Kale kicking within 15 minutes, so that was a relief, but I was still scared out of my mind. My OB told me to meet her at labor and delivery after checking into the ER, where they monitored the baby for 6 hours. Luckily Kale was absolutely fine, so Mama took the brunt of it and baby Kale was none the wiser. Then of course, I got checked out too and mostly I was just sore and emotionally shaken up. 12 hours later, we were finally back at home and reassured that the baby was all right. It was the worst possible scenario, but the best possible outcome. So, thank God and I'll definitely be getting another Lexus to keep me safe!
On a happier note, I had my regular 24 week appointment and everything looks great. My uterus is measuring 24cm which is of course right in line with 24 weeks, and Kale's heartbeat sounds beautiful. I also took my Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT) where I had to drink a sugar drink given to me by the doctor, wait an hour, and have my blood drawn. This will determine if I have gestational diabetes. Everyone always talks about how awful and disgusting the sugar drink is, but I found it quite tasty, so I don't know what that says about me :) As my belly grows SO SO much bigger, Daddy seems to be dreaming more about Kale. Once when it was triple digit temperature outside, Jason said "Maybe Kale could be an environmental scientist." He's also decided Kale should play piano, guitar, learn taekwondo, and most importantly, play games with Daddy without putting the pieces in his mouth! Of course, most baby talk drives Daddy crazy, and Mommy has to keep it to a minimum. Kale has been moving and kicking more than ever, sometimes hurting Mommy! We can clearly see him moving and he often slides across my belly, which feels quite weird and gross. I still love when he kicks and punches, but I could do without the sliding. 24 weeks is a milestone in that it is possible for him to survive outside of my womb now, but hopefully, we won't have to test that out until late December. |
